The CrossFit Games: A Brief History

updated December 1, 2018

The CrossFit Games are an athletic competition sponsored by CrossFit Inc and Reebok. They were founded in 2007 and have been held every year since. The exist solely to find the Fittest On Earth and competitors really need to be ready for anything.

The Athletes at the Games aren’t able to train the same way they would in other competitions. They learn about the events days (sometimes hours) beforehand, and the Games include surprise elements that aren’t a typical part of CrossFit.

The Games themselves consist of 3 stages. The Open, the Regionals and the Games. Participation and sponsorship have grown a lot since the beginning. In 2007, the prize was $500. Last year first place paid $275,000. The total prize payout was $2,200,000!
